Carols Story

23rd October 2020

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month we would like to share the personal story of our very own Carol Davies, a member of our branch customer service team, who’s strength is an inspiration to all of us at the Society.

In June 2015 I was diagnosed with HER-2 positive breast cancer

“I had Bilateral Mastectomies, 6 cycles of chemotherapy, 18 months of Herceptin treatment, 5 operations (including reconstruction), and I continue to take medication. I am very lucky that I can share this with you today due to a wonderful team of medical staff whom have supported me for the last 5 years. My life was saved because of my amazing Dad, and my late Auntie who sadly lost her battle with the same disease.”

“Due to our family history of Cancer I was put on an early screening program, and at the age of 40 I went for my first mammogram screening and the cancer was detected. I did not find a lump, so if this system was not in place it might have been a different story to the one I am sharing with you now. In these difficult times we are currently facing, Cancer has not gone away, despite less people attending referrals, so I encourage everyone to please check for lumps!”

Carol recently donated 10 inches of hair to The Little Princess Trust who provide free, real-hair wigs for young cancer sufferers, or for children and young people experiencing the devastating effects of hair loss. This donation was to mark five years since she began chemotherapy.
