Here at Dudley Building Society, we are dedicated to powering the lives of our savers, whether you are saving for a rainy day, for a savings goal, or you’re looking for returns on a larger pot of savings.

We’ve partnered with the Building Societies Association (BSA) for their first UK Savings Week, which aims to help you find your ideal way to save, with hints and tips for making the most of your money.

Is now the right time to start saving?

Putting even a very small amount away each week can help families deal with expected costs, such as Christmas, or build a buffer to help if something goes wrong. This can reduce worry and help people to feel more in control in unexpected times.

Starting to save regularly, even with a very small amount, can help form a habit of saving which can be adjusted depending on personal circumstances at any time.

Those who have outstanding personal loans or other short-term debts should consider paying these off before starting to build their savings, as the interest charges on these types of loans and debts are usually quite high.

Saving tips

We know that everyone is different when it comes to saving, so we wanted to provide you with a range of useful tips that you can use in your day-to-day life.

Be Real

Make it aspirational, but reachable and specific, e.g. instead of ‘save for my future’, say ‘Save £3,000 to buy a car by the end of next year’.

Stay Focused

Track your progress, and let yourself feel proud about reaching milestones (e.g. £100, £1000 etc).

Shop Savvy

Shop around for the best deals. Look to make the most of cashback, coupons and vouchers.

Avoid Temptations

Go into situations ready to recognise when you are being tempted to spend.

Be Consistent

Make it regular, so you set a pattern of saving.

Stay Balanced

Find your own balance to make progress in your savings without having to sacrifice all your luxury spending
