Bereavement during the Coronavirus

We are committed to helping our customers through this difficult time. We are making changes to our Bereavement process in order to do this. If you have been affected by the loss of a loved one, we realise that the current circumstances have placed barriers in the way we would ordinarily support you. If you need to inform us that someone has passed away, you can do this online or by phone in the first instance. We will then call you to discuss the process.

Please do not visit our Branch network as we will be unable to provide the service face to face in line with the Government advice.

How can I let you know that someone has passed away?

Please contact a member of our Customer Services Team on 01384 231414. Alternatively, you can email us using the email addresses below:

Mortgages - mortgages@dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk

What happens after I let you know that someone has passed away?

Once we have received notification that a member has passed away, our Customer Services Team will confirm next steps.

If the account was held in the sole name of the person who has passed away, we will apply a hold to the account even before we have seen a copy of the death certificate. This means no further transactions will be permitted until the relevant documents have been received.

What information will Dudley Building Society need to know?

When a Dudley Building Society member passes away, we require specific information, so we can take the necessary actions. You can let us know over the telephone or by email, and a member of the team will talk through everything that needs to be done.

We will require the following information to be provided:

  • The original death certificate or a certified copy
  • Names and contact details of the person(s) administrating the deceased’s estate.
  • If you have chosen a third party to act on your behalf, we will require the solicitor’s/ legal entity’s contact details

How do I provide the documents you require?

You can send the documents to us by post.

Dudley Building Society, 7 Harbour Buildings, The Waterfront, Brierley Hill, West Midlands, DY5 1LN

Due to current circumstances, post may take longer.

Support with funeral bills

You will be able to make a withdrawal from the account of the person who has passed away to settle the funeral costs. We will require the original funeral invoice to be supplied and written authority from the Personal Representatives. A cheque will be withdrawn from the deceased’s account made payable to the funeral directors.

Any additional funeral expenses i.e. costs associated with the wake/flowers cannot be included in this withdrawal.

Please send us a copy of the full and final invoice on the funeral director’s headed paper. You’ll also need to send us a certified copy of the death certificate (provided by the registrar), if you haven’t already sent it.
